What it’s known for

A picture-book medieval old town and Imperial Castle, tiny grilled Nürnberger sausages, gingerbread (Lebkuchen), the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt, and a heavy 20th-century history (the rallies and the Nuremberg Trials).

Neighbourhoods to know

St. Johannis (charming, central, popular), Gostenhof ('GoHo': creative, multicultural), Erlenstegen (upscale), and nearby Fürth and Erlangen (Siemens Healthineers, university) form one metro area.

Getting around

U-Bahn (one of the first driverless lines in Germany), trams and buses; compact and walkable. NUE airport is ~12 min by U-Bahn. Munich and the Franconian wine and lake country are close.

Food, drink & culture

Three little bratwursts in a roll ('Drei im Weggla'), Schäufele (roast pork shoulder), Lebkuchen and strong Franconian beer. Albrecht Dürer's house, a serious toy-making heritage, and the biggest Christmas market in Germany.

How far English gets you

Siemens, DATEV and the games/market-research industry use English, but Franconia is more German-speaking day-to-day.

The expat scene

Comfortable and mid-sized, strong in engineering, IT, logistics and market research. A relaxed, affordable alternative to Munich.

Job market

Engineering, IT, market research (GfK), logistics and manufacturing (Siemens, DATEV).

Honest watch-outs

Locals will remind you it's Franconia, not Bavaria — a distinct identity and dialect. The international scene is smaller than the big metros.

Newcomer note

A comfortable, mid-sized alternative to Munich with a strong job market.
