Anmeldung: registering your address in Germany

Almost nothing in Germany works until you complete your Anmeldung. You must register within 14 days of moving into a home. Here is exactly how.

The Anmeldung is your official address registration at the local Bürgeramt. It produces the Meldebescheinigung, and triggers your tax ID (Steuer-ID) by post — which your employer needs to pay you correctly.

1. Get a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord (confirmation that you live there). You cannot register without it.
2. Book an Anmeldung appointment at your city Bürgeramt online. In big cities book immediately — slots go fast; check all districts.
3. Bring your passport, the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, and the completed Anmeldung form (Anmeldeformular).
4. At the appointment you receive the Meldebescheinigung on the spot. The Steuer-ID arrives by post within ~2–3 weeks.

After Anmeldung you can open a bank account with a real German IBAN, collect your residence permit, and register for health insurance properly.
