Banking in Germany

You need a German bank account with a real IBAN for your salary, rent and most contracts. Here is how to open one as a newcomer — and what to use before your Anmeldung is done.

Do you need a German IBAN?

Employers, landlords and utilities generally expect a German (DE) IBAN. EU IBANs are legally acceptable but sometimes rejected in practice, so a German account avoids friction.

Opening an account without Anmeldung

Some mobile banks let you open an account with just a passport and video ID before you have a registered address; a traditional bank usually needs your Meldebescheinigung first.

Free vs. paid accounts

Compare monthly fees, ATM withdrawals, English support and whether the IBAN is German. Our comparison lists non-promotional options too.
