What it’s known for
Oktoberfest, BMW, FC Bayern, beer gardens under chestnut trees, and being Germany's wealthiest, safest big city. The Alps and Italy are a short drive; lakes are on the doorstep.
Neighbourhoods to know
Schwabing (classic, bohemian-turned-upscale), Maxvorstadt (universities, museums), Glockenbachviertel (trendy, LGBTQ+ heart), Haidhausen (charming, central), Sendling and Giesing (better value). Prices everywhere are the highest in Germany.
Getting around
Clean, punctual U-Bahn/S-Bahn/tram network. Extremely bike-friendly. MUC airport (~40 min by S-Bahn) is a major hub. You can be surfing the Eisbach river wave or hiking in the Alps within the hour.
Food, drink & culture
Weißwurst with sweet mustard and a pretzel before noon, roast pork (Schweinsbraten), and beer served by the litre (Maß). The English Garden is one of the world's largest urban parks — with a permanent river surfing wave.
How far English gets you
International companies use English, but daily life and bureaucracy lean German more than Berlin. Learning German pays off faster here.
The expat scene
Large and professional — strong in automotive, tech and finance. Well-off, family-oriented and less party-driven than Berlin.
Job market
Automotive, insurance, engineering, IT, biotech. Home to BMW, Siemens, Allianz and a strong tech scene.
Honest watch-outs
The rental market is brutal and the most expensive in the country — line up viewings before you arrive and expect fierce competition. It can feel conservative and closed at first.
