What it’s known for

A booming creative and startup scene, Bach and a 800-year music tradition, the 1989 Peaceful Revolution that helped topple the Wall, and lake-filled former mining land turned beaches.

Neighbourhoods to know

Plagwitz (post-industrial, artists, lofts), Südvorstadt & Connewitz (young, alternative, nightlife), Waldstraßenviertel (grand, leafy), Gohlis (family, elegant). Rents are among the best value of any major German city.

Getting around

Trams, buses and a city tunnel S-Bahn; very flat and cyclable. LEJ airport and a huge DHL hub sit nearby, and the ICE reaches Berlin in ~1h15.

Food, drink & culture

Gose (a sour-salty local beer), Leipziger Lerche pastries, and Allerlei vegetables. St Thomas Church (where Bach worked), the Gewandhaus orchestra, and a gallery scene in old cotton mills (the 'Spinnerei').

How far English gets you

Younger and more open than most eastern cities, with growing English-speaking startups — but you'll rely on German sooner than in Berlin.

The expat scene

Small but fast-growing and creative; strong in logistics (DHL), automotive (Porsche/BMW plants) and startups. Cheap enough to take risks in.

Job market

Automotive (Porsche, BMW plants), logistics (DHL hub), and a growing startup/creative scene.

Honest watch-outs

Fewer English-only jobs than the western metros. Rents are rising fast as the 'Hypezig' reputation grows. Winters are grey and continental-cold.

Did you know?

Newcomer note

Cheaper and calmer than Berlin, though fewer English-first jobs.
