What it’s known for
Germany's biggest port, the red-brick Speicherstadt warehouse district (UNESCO), the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, the Reeperbahn nightlife strip, and a cool maritime elegance. The Beatles came of age here.

Sternschanze & Karolinenviertel (hip, nightlife), Ottensen (family-friendly, creative), Eppendorf & Winterhude (elegant, leafy, by the Alster), St. Pauli (gritty, iconic), HafenCity (new, waterfront, pricey).
Getting around
U-Bahn, S-Bahn and buses (plus harbour ferries that run on the transit ticket). Very bike-friendly. HAM airport is ~25 min by S-Bahn — one of the closest to a city centre in Germany.
Food, drink & culture
Fish rolls (Fischbrötchen) at the Sunday fish market, Franzbrötchen (a cinnamon pastry), and Labskaus. Musicals, a strong theatre and live-music tradition, and endless walks around the Alster lakes.
How far English gets you
International and trade-oriented, so English works in many workplaces; day-to-day still rewards German. Northerners are famously reserved but reliable.
The expat scene
Solid, centred on media, logistics, aviation (Airbus) and consulting. More understated than Berlin, but welcoming once you're in.

Honest watch-outs
It rains a lot and the weather is grey; locals joke it's the 'Schietwetter' (bad-weather) capital. Rents are high (below Munich), and the reserved Hanseatic style can feel cool at first.
