What it’s known for
Sunshine (one of Germany's warmest cities), the tiny Bächle water channels running through the streets, a soaring medieval Münster cathedral, a car-free eco-district (Vauban), and being the gateway to the Black Forest.

Getting around
One of Germany's most cyclable cities — you barely need a tram, though the tram network is excellent. Trains to Basel/EuroAirport and into the Black Forest and France; the Rhine and Alsace are close.

Baden wines from the surrounding hills, the long grilled 'Lange Rote' sausage, Black Forest gateau, and a green, student-driven café culture. Hiking and skiing start on the doorstep at the Schauinsland mountain.

A university town with international research (and solar/environmental institutes) uses English in academia; daily life and most jobs need German.
