What it’s known for
The UNESCO Zollverein colliery (once the world's most modern coal mine, now a design and culture campus), several DAX company headquarters, and surprising greenery — it was European Green Capital 2017.
Neighbourhoods to know
Rüttenscheid ('Rü': the lively café-and-shopping heart), Werden (historic, by the Baldeney lake), Stadtwald (green, upscale), Frohnhausen (central, affordable).
Getting around
U-/Stadtbahn, trams and S-Bahn plug into the Ruhr network; flat cycling and sailing on the Baldeneysee. Düsseldorf (DUS) airport is ~30 min; the whole Ruhr metro is on the doorstep.
Food, drink & culture
Hearty Ruhr fare and a strong industrial-culture calendar (the ExtraSchicht 'night of industry'). The Museum Folkwang art museum, Zollverein's swimming pool and ice rink in a former plant, and Baldeney lake beaches.
How far English gets you
Corporate HQs (E.ON, RWE, thyssenkrupp) use English at senior levels, but daily life is German-first.
The expat scene
Corporate and steady — energy, trade and services. Less flashy than Düsseldorf, very affordable, and greener than its reputation.
Job market
Energy (E.ON, RWE), corporate HQs, healthcare and services.
Honest watch-outs
The south is leafy and well-off while the north is more industrial and struggling — a real north-south divide. Nightlife is modest.
Did you know?
- Half of Essen is green space, forest and water despite its coal past.
- You can swim in a pool built inside a former coking plant at Zollverein.
Newcomer note
Corporate roles at DAX headquarters; low cost of living.
