What it’s known for

Fashion and advertising, the Rhine promenade, dark Altbier, the largest Japanese community in Germany, and the Altstadt — packed with ~260 bars in a few streets, hence 'the longest bar in the world'.

Neighbourhoods to know

Flingern & Bilk (creative, young, good value), Pempelfort (central, elegant), Oberkassel (upscale, across the river, leafy), Little Tokyo around Immermannstraße (Japanese shops and restaurants), Unterbilk/Medienhafen (design, waterfront).

Getting around

Stadtbahn, trams and buses; flat and bike-friendly along the Rhine. DUS is Germany's third-biggest airport, ~13 min by train. Central to the whole Rhine-Ruhr region of 10+ million people.

Food, drink & culture

Altbier poured in a brisk round system, Rheinischer Sauerbraten, and outstanding Japanese food. Big art scene (Kunstsammlung NRW), Japan Day fireworks, and one of the biggest funfairs on the Rhine.

How far English gets you

International business and a large Japanese/expat presence make English viable at work; German still smooths daily life.

The expat scene

Corporate, stylish and international — advertising, telecoms, fashion and trade fairs. Strong Japanese, and growing global, communities.

Job market

Advertising, fashion, telecoms, consulting and trade fairs.

Honest watch-outs

There's a friendly but real rivalry with nearby Cologne (don't order a Kölsch here). It can feel image-conscious and pricey for its size.

Newcomer note

Strong international business networks; well-connected airport.
