What it’s known for

Its vast Gothic cathedral (Kölner Dom), Kölsch beer, the wild pre-Lent Carnival, one of Europe's biggest Pride parades, and a famously open, chatty local temperament.

Neighbourhoods to know

Ehrenfeld (creative, multicultural, hip), Belgisches Viertel (boutiques, cafés, design), Südstadt (charming, riverside), Nippes (family, value), Deutz (across the river, developing).

Getting around

U-Bahn/tram (KVB), buses and regional trains; very walkable and bike-friendly along the Rhine. CGN airport is ~15 min by train. Central for day trips to Bonn, Düsseldorf and the Ruhr.

Food, drink & culture

Kölsch, served in small 0.2 l glasses that a 'Köbes' keeps refilling until you cap your beer mat. Halve Hahn (rye roll with cheese), a huge media and music scene, and the cathedral you can climb (533 steps).

How far English gets you

Friendly and used to visitors; English works socially and in media/games companies, though German helps in most jobs.

The expat scene

Welcoming and social — easy to make friends. Strong in media/TV, insurance, logistics and a growing games industry.

Job market

Media/TV, insurance, logistics, games industry and a lively startup scene.

Honest watch-outs

Much of the city was rebuilt after WWII, so it's less postcard-pretty than Munich. Carnival week shuts normal life down — you either love it or flee it.

Newcomer note
