What it’s known for
The Grimm Town Musicians of Bremen statue, a UNESCO market square (town hall and Roland statue), Beck's beer, the crooked artists' lane Böttcherstraße, and a growing aerospace industry.
Neighbourhoods to know
Das Viertel (Ostertor/Steintor: bohemian, café-and-bar heart), Schwachhausen (elegant, leafy, family), Neustadt (across the Weser, up-and-coming), Findorff (relaxed, close to the park).
Getting around
Compact tram and bus network; famously flat and one of Germany's most bike-friendly cities. BRE airport is right in the city (~11 min by tram). Hamburg is an hour by train.
Food, drink & culture
Knipp and Kohl und Pinkel (kale with sausage), Beck's on the river, and the two-week Freimarkt funfair. Maritime museums, a space centre, and Weser-side promenades.
How far English gets you
Aerospace, logistics and the university use English, but it's a mid-sized northern city where German helps a lot.
The expat scene
Modest but friendly, anchored by Airbus/OHB aerospace, a Mercedes plant, logistics and food industry. Affordable and manageable.
Job market
Aerospace (Airbus, OHB), automotive (Mercedes plant), logistics and food industry.
Honest watch-outs
It's small, so the job market and nightlife are more limited than the big metros. Northern weather is wet and windy.
Did you know?
- Touching the donkey's legs on the Town Musicians statue is said to bring luck.
- Bremen and its port city Bremerhaven together form one federal state.
Newcomer note
Affordable and manageable; good for aerospace and engineering careers.
